Paper cones, paper tubes and bobbins are used as yarn carriers and paper cores are utilised for paper and plastic film reels. The collapsing force that the carriers are able to resist depends on various factors such as manufacturing process, physical size, the moisture content in the carrier, quality and quantity of paper and adhesive.
It is not an easy task to understand the factors and their influence on the strength of the paper cone by a user and also for the manufacturer to understand the effect of each variable quantitatively. However, it is easy for both the manufacturer and user to distinguish between good and bad. An appropriate standard of monitoring the quality of the paper cone.
Cone Crush Tester
This is a very reliable and user friendly equipment which creates a force that increases gradually and is exerted on the surface of the paper cone. The collapsing point is detected using a load cell and chip based indicator.
1. Flat Crush Test
In the flat crush test, the sample is pressed horizontally between two flat platens and the collapsing point is recorded. This test is applicable to core pipe which is used as a packing medium i.e. a product is packed inside the tube and multiple tubes are kept one upon another. It creates a tube-to-tube pressure and creates flattened cores.
2. Radial Crush Test
In the radial crush test, the sample is pressed horizontally between two curved platens and the collapsing point is recorded. These platens are made tightened as per every single different core size. The jaws screen about 1/3rd of the surface from the top and 1/3rd of the surface from the bottom. The 2 sides are left with 1/6th and 1/6th surface open. The test is applicable to Core Pipe that is used as a winding medium or carrier. A product is wounded on the outer surface of the tube. The winding tension possesses a compressive force to act radially inwards on the tube and make the tube to collapse inwards.
Applications:
Cone collapsing strength tester is a high quality machine that measures the crushing strength of cones. It is formed of bobbins, paper cones, cardboard and several other packaging materials. It works on the principle of the radial crush test method. The machine is constructed in a manner that force generated is put to 66% of the testing sample surface.
