Flexible packaging materials are used in various industries due to the quality of packaging they promise. The quality offered by these packaging materials is beyond top-notch as they ensure zero leakage in case of packaging fluids, firm gripping from the edges that makes it easy to seal, and minimal space for storage due to their flexible and ductile nature. This allows the operator to store huge amounts of the final product into the small packaging product.

Although these flexible packaging products offer so many things at such an affordable price, there is one thing that most manufacturers and shipment operators are concerned about i.e. the tensile or the durability of these packaging materials. The operator has to evaluate the flexible packaging material with utmost precision and measure the quality of these materials against impacts and falls.

These materials are utilized in the manufacturing process of the final products only after rigorous and extreme testing to ensure that these materials truly act as final layers over materials and can keep the product packed inside away from getting contaminated due to exposure or leaked due to faulty packaging material.

To perform durability tests of these materials a top-quality lab testing instrument is designed by the finest manufacturing company – Presto Group. The company has come up with the dart impact testera lab testing equipment that simulates the impacts caused by flexible packaging materials like films & laminates in the real world.

Understanding with the help of an example, you must have observed the spillage of milk when a milk packet is dropped from a height on a hard surface like roads, marbles, concrete floors, etc. that happens because of compromised packaging material during the production process to minimize the input costs. The dart impact tester simulates the same impacts and evaluates the impact resistance of a material which allows the manufacturer as well as the seller of the product to guarantee the resistance and thus provide quality assurance.

The falling dart impact tester has a top-notch working mechanism that is trusted by manufacturers all across the globe as it allows them to take expedited measures in assessing the durability as well as the impact resistance of flexible packaging materials.

Operating Procedure of the Dart Impact Tester

The lab testing equipment is designed with top-notch features and a working mechanism that aids the operator in performing the test with absolute seamlessness by streamlining the operations.

  • To conduct the test with the dart tester the foremost step to undertake is to select the dart as per the quality of the material being tested. The instrument is offered with two different kinds of darts i.e. the phenolic dart and the steel dart. The weight of the phenolic dart varies from 5 grams to 90 grams whereas the steel dart can range from 2 kgs to 3 kgs.

  • After choosing the different types of darts, the operator has to choose among the methods A & B which refers to the height of the drop of the dart. Method A - the dart falls from a height of 660mm, and on the contrary, in Method - B the dart falls from a height of 1524mm.

  • The height of the dart locking mechanism can be adjusted with the help of the Allen key installed within the instrument to avoid the unwanted falling of the dart.

  • The operator can now adjust the specimen above the dart board with the help of the pneumatic specimen clamper that prevents any kind of wrinkles or bulging in the specimen in order to ensure accurate test results.

  • After firmly clamping the specimen, the operator can release the brake that is holding the dart. Once the brake is released, the dart falls freely and impacts the specimen. If the specimen is not durable enough to withstand the impact, the dart ruptures through the specimen into the dart board which is made with durable material for continuous testing. On the other hand, if the specimen is durable enough to withstand the impact of the dart, the instrument is equipped with a feature of acrylic cover that limits the ricocheting of the dart.

  • The microprocessor-based digital of the instrument determines the pass/fail criteria of the specimen by indicating it with an LED-designed output. The operator can adhere to the same and perform further testing.

  • By undertaking all the above-mentioned steps the operator can perform the dart impact test with utmost resilience and accuracy, enabling the manufacturer to eradicate all the compromised attributes or uncertainties present in the flexible packaging material before it is utilized for the packaging of crucial or edible items.

  • Along with understanding the operating procedure of the dart impact tester, it is also vital to adhere to the specifications that are followed by the instrument to conduct the test.

Specifications of the Dart Impact Tester
