This device is utilized to gauge the durability, against tearing or bursting. Used to check the quality/durability/performance, it basically assesses the strength of the material.
Bursting Strength Tester helps in assessing the strength and resistance of materials such as:
Paper
Cardboard
Textiles
Plastics and other flexible materials
Can be assessed using the bursting strength tester.
The test is crucial because:
It evaluates the ability of a material to withstand external pressure
Or force without rupturing or bursting.
The material is extremely vital in variable industries for packaging and other purposes which makes it crucial to test it against transit & storage hazards.
The Si unit of calculating the bursting strength is Pounds per square inch (PSI); it can also be calculated into newtons per square centimeter (N/cm²).
Understanding with the help of an example, there should be a minimum bursting strength imbibed within the packaging material to avoid contamination of the item kept inside.
Working & Principle
The Bursting Strength Tester works in the following way:
Preparation of Specimen: A sample of the material, often circular in shape, is prepared according to specific standards.
Clamping and Pressurizing: The instrument has jaws & fixtures for the firm clamping of the sample that ensures no movement during the course of testing.
Applying pressure: A pressure through hydraulic assembly is exerted on the sample, resulting in the bursting or rupturing of the sample.
Recording Results: The peak load that the specimen is able to withstand is recorded and depicted through the display for analysis.
Analysis: This bursting strength value provides valuable information about the material's durability and its ability to withstand pressure. You can read more on the working principle of bursting tester.
Presto Bursting Strength Tester comes with additional features such as:
A digital display
Automatic controls and
Different-sized clamps to accommodate various sample sizes.
Key Features of Presto Bursting Strength Tester
Precision with Variable Pressure: The bursting strength tester is equipped with the capability to apply variable pressure, allowing for precise testing tailored to different materials and industry standards.
Advanced Gripper Technology: The instrument boasts a state-of-the-art gripper mechanism designed to securely hold the specimen in place during the testing process. This ensures accurate and consistent results by minimizing any potential movement.
Notch Cutter for Standardization: To adhere to industry standards, the bursting strength tester includes a notch cutter, allowing operators to create standardized incisions in the specimen. This ensures uniform testing conditions and reliable results.
Rustproof Design: Constructed with mild steel coated with a seven-layered powder paint, the instrument is resistant to corrosion.
Q1; Which industry regulations do it adhere to?
A1: The bursting strength tester complies with ASTM standards
ASTM D 3786-80a
ASTM D 3786-01
ISO 1060 PART-1 1987
Q2. Is the instrument used to test Tetra Pak packaging the same for other juice and milk packaging?
A2: Packaging and their coatings can differ hugely, so you would need to refer to the standard you want to test to & see what equipment is specified.
Q3. We have a type of packaging that has different layers of paper, board and Aluminium foil. Does Presto Bursting Tester cover this?
A3: We have tested films and aluminum foils for pharmaceutical packaging using Presto Bursting Strength Tester in the past. one can use variable setting in the case of lamination over the sample, this enables the operator to identify the weaker layer.
Q4: What kinds of problems should one pay attention to regarding the testing of the strength of bursting?
a. Not just foremost but it is prominently crucial to clamp the sample in a way that it covers the diaphragm completely. one must make sure that the clamped specimen is free from any wrinkle or uncertainty to achieve accuracy.
b. The acceleration rate is adjusted based on the break time. For example, for wool it is (15 ± 10) seconds and for other fabrics (30 ± 10) s. Make observations during testing.
c. When the sample is torn, the level of strength of the specimen is the sum of the strength of the sample and film, minus the diaphragm strength. there are a total of three methods in order to ascertain the strength of diaphragm:
Simply keep track of the maximum break point of every sample during the course of testing and make out an average from it. you can now increase the pressure over the diaphragm without the specimen and assess the expansion of the diaphragm.
Record the breaking time of each sample and find the average value. Now you can simply increase the pressure without the sample placed over the diaphragm and measure Weather the pressure time is equal to the average bursting time or not.
After the sample is torn, please do not reduce the pressure to remove the sample. At that moment, the pressure value is the diaphragm pressure. In this case, it is recommended to perform testing with the fastened clamps to assess the highest expansion level of the diaphragm which should align with the sample.
d. in order to perform calibration, one can use standard films as well as Aluminium foils.
e. Consider switching the diaphragm with another neoprene rubber in case of slight deformation. The standard deformation is when the diaphragm expands to a certain height such that there is a significant difference between the Diaphragm shape and normal spherical crown.
f. Pay attention to whether the oil is sufficient in the oil tank. Quickly fill it up for expediting the process. Otherwise pressure cannot reach its full capacity.
