Scuff Resistance Tester is equipment to evaluate the Print Quality / Rub proofs of prints on a substrate. Excellent Print Quality is a perfect combination of:
Good Ink + Good Paper + Good Process + Good Drying
If any of the above factors go wrong, the result can be disastrous. The most commonly used method to evaluate print quality is by rubbing two printed planes against each other. However, if this is done physically, the amount of force applied during chafing cannot be quantified and kept constant. Furthermore, it is difficult to maintain the plane of constant contact and maintain a track of the number of rubs. Hence, this technique is considered as more operator dependent.
Scuff Resistance Tester is the technique that runs the facade of two printed labels with each other by placing the printed surface face to face and on the same plane. The movement of the jaws is done with the speed of 60 rotations per minute under a continuous rubbing pressure. The scuffing instrument is widely used by the manufacturers in paper and packaging industries to measure the color fastness of printed and coated surfaces at the time of rubbing and chafing.
As per the standard operating procedure, the sample is placed on the machine with the printed sides up. A weight of 2 psi is placed on the device which is attached to the sample. After this, the testing device is pre-setted to the number of strokes, and the test is initiated. After this required number of strokes, the samples are examined for any kind of ink transfer or scuffing.
