Testing of rubbers includes measuring physical, chemical and mechanical properties. On the basis of certain parameters, it is possible to analyze the purity of the raw material. These parameters include moisture volume, melting point, dry mass volume, the percentage of ash content in rubbers, specifications of the rubber toxicants, acid value, refractive index, and many more. From these methods that are used to calculate the quality of raw material, it is required to be exact and quick, and their results should be in correlation with purity of the material.
Melting Point – It is the temperature calculated in Degree Celsius. It is a temperature at which change in the consistency of the material takes place i.e. from a solid form to liquid state. It is one of the most general criteria that are used to calculate the purity of the compound. The temperature of the material dropped out at the moment when small dirt content is present in the material. The melting point of the rubbers is determined with the help of accelerators, anti-degrades and many more. The rubber testing instruments that are used to measure the melting point of the rubbers is Accelerated weathering testers, Hot air oven etc.
Dropping Point – It is a temperature at which the rubber substance is heated to a certain temperature and with certain rate to soften the material to such a point that devised drop will fall down due to its weight. The test is similar to determine the dropping point by a circle and a ball where generated drop will drop down. Dropping point of the rubbers is determined at resins and asphalt.
Volatile Substances – These are the compounds that are being released from a sample when a temperature increases. The temperature of 105oC is used to determine the compounds. In most of the cases, it is volatile organic compounds that are expressed to the original sample backfill in %. It is determined at silica, carbon black, organic chemicals such as anti-degrades, accelerators, and others.
Dry Mass – Dry mass of the rubbers is the sample left after defining volatile substances at appropriate humidity. It is stated in terms of % for the original sample backfill. It is determined at the liquid state of the sample at the time of separating.
Ash Content – Ash content is composed of organic, at a certain temperature non-volatile and indecomposable compounds which are parts of the sample. It is another major property which is used to measure the quality of rubbers. Due to decomposition of certain inorganic compounds, the ash volume does not have to define inorganic parts that must be shared in the very exact way. It is stated in % to that of the original sample. For determination of ash volume, the sample needs to be kept at temperature 950 Degree Celsius. It is known as carbon black content, auxiliary rubber additives, organic chemicals, etc. This property can be tested by high-quality of muffle furnace.
Apart from these, there are numerous parameters that are used to measure the properties of rubbers. All these properties are testing using high-quality of testing instruments. Read more at: Rubber Testing Instruments
